A double-sided theatre program for a fictitious play, Balance. The outcome adheres to a set of detailed requirements with the purpose of emulating a realistic client-designer relationship.

Design Brief

Balance entails the hardship of a less-fortunate family living in Japan and their journey to survive in an unjust society. The performance is one that induces sympathy. With a clear understanding of the project specifications, I began to research and gathered inspirations that would align with the client’s (instructor’s) requirements.

Brainstorming

A hand-drawn concept map was created to encourage boundless thoughts and ideas connected to the topic. The visualization of ideas helped me organize my thoughts. I highlighted the areas that interested me the most and explored further from these branches.

Ideation & Variations

Based on the brainstorming process, I diverged once again by sketching objects and thumbnails. The drawings that stood out to me were then developed into rough compositions. The layouts were presented to my peers who helped direct me into a final design.

Prototypes

The creation process commenced once I have analyzed the feedback and understood the direction I should continue to explore. One of the biggest challenges was to incorporate all the textual and visual elements onto a double-sided canvas while maintaining a clean and unique aesthetic. I enjoyed exploring and testing various compositions with the patterns, texture, texts and images. After all, it’s all about the “Balance”.

Peer Review

  • I think the font pairing could be improved! Maybe find a different font to complement the main type (the font for “Vancouver Starlight Theatre” is a bit hard to read)
  • Negative space between chunks of text on the back page can be evenly spaced.
Jaime Yap

  • The attention that should have gone to the title text on the first page gravitated a little more to the two bodies of water as they are in a different tone than the rest of the page.
  • On the backside, maybe change the “BALANCE” font to the same as it was on the front side for consistency in design.
Hanna Lu

  • Is there a reason behind the date/ location/ address…etc are the only texts that are bolded?
